Walk the Winds Trip - Pack In Date: August 13, 2007

This is a 7 day trip = discounted price =$1,100.00

A Very Special Area:

The Bridger Teton National Forest was our nations very first National Forest and is still one of the largest and wildest in the US. Most of Wyoming's' tallest mountains are located here and 6 of the largest 7 glaciers in the contiguous 48 states are also here. The Bridger Wilderness area has over 1,300 lakes and over 1,000 are known to have trout. We have six types of trout and arctic Grayling. Four of the states fish records come from this area along with the World Record Golden Trout. Come and see why this area inspired the very first National Forest policy.

On all of our Walk on the Winds Trips, we hike up into the World Famous Wind River Mountain Range and deep into the Bridger Wilderness area. We pick up the Highline trail which follows along the continental divide for the length of the range. We will rise above timberline and cross several passes.

Each of our carefully picked campsites is in such a beautiful spot you'll agree that each is better than any postcard or calendar picture. You will enjoy excellent meals, many of which are prepared in Dutch ovens, while watching the sun set upon the glaciated peaks. Almost every client we have had is completely amazed at the quality of our camp fare. We are constantly bribed for our recipes. (We never give one up, you'll have to come back)

Most of our campsites are by alpine Lakes. The fishermen in your group will not be disappointed.

As the trip progresses and you start thinking that you've never seen anything as spectacular as the mornings sites, you crest another pass and are awestruck at the view in front of you.

On the 7 day trip, we are moving each day. We get up about 6:30 to 7:00 and break camp. We enjoy a hearty mountain man breakfast (actually we eat a lot of Quiche, Juevos Rancheros, Egg Strata… (Jilda likes keeping a gourmet flare to things). We will usually be moving before 10:00 AM. We'll find an inspiring spot for our lunch and find a new campsite around 3:00 pm.

On the 10 day trips we will have a layover day for rest and enjoyment. Sometimes when we have fishermen along, we plan to camp at a spot where we can access one of our secret fishing spots. A favorite layover day is at the Twin, Elbow Lakes area which allows for a climb to the top of Stroud Peak which is noted as one of the most spectacular views in the range. Another favorite spot allows for a climb to the Continental divide, on a peak overlooking the Wind River Indian Reservation .

For our last night in the mountains, we drop into the Green River Valley which is surrounded with 2,000 foot cliffs. The constant roar of the waterfalls reminds you of the glaciers up above, one of which (Stroud Glacier) is noted as the head waters of the Green River, which is the main contributory to the Colorado system which created the Grand Canyon.

On our last days hike we follow the Green River all day as it tumbles down to Green River Lakes. We pass by the foot of Square top Mountain which has been filmed for movies and has been the cover of Rand McNally's Road atlas many times. You will know why this area inspired the National Forest Policy we enjoy today.

When we reach the trailhead, and signs of the civilized world once again, you'll understand why so many people have looked at us and said they wish they could just turn around and head back the other way. We have several clients who have made this trip more than once.

When you book your trip, we will send you a reservation confirmation which will require a 30% deposit. Upon receipt of your deposit, we will send you a little booklet which will help you to prepare for the trip. It contains information on how to get to the ranch, What to bring on the trip, how to pack, what to expect of the weather conditions that time of year, safety tips for mountain hiking.

We can supply many references for you if you like.

Most folks like to stay the night before and after at our Historic DC Bar Guest Ranch. The ranch was homesteaded at the turn of last century by the Dew family and when they proved up on the homestead, president Calvin Coolidge signed over the property to them. The first change of title from the Dew family was to me. A stay at the ranch will make you feel as though you've gone back 100 years in time and is the perfect start for your adventure.
